Payment Security: the Developer’s Duty

According to technology research firm Gartner, three out of four mobile applications failed basic security tests last year.1 Furthermore, the McAfee Labs Threats Report identified more than six million samples of mobile malware, up from just 1.5 million in Q1 2013.2 Despite efforts to contain the threat, hackers are capitalizing on the proliferation of unsecured mobile apps. Although merchants and consumers alike are becoming increasingly aware of the growing risks associated with mobile payments, adoption of this new payment type continues to accelerate.

In this eBook, we’ll take a closer look at the challenges facing developers in securing mobile payment applications. A secure payments environment requires collaboration between developers, software vendors, dealers, acquirers, and merchants, but developers shoulder perhaps the largest responsibility. In addition to meeting a long list of regulations, developers must also take into account the impact of their applications on the merchant and consumer experience. How can developers execute a secure, seamless, and user-friendly mobile payment experience?

This eBook answers that question– and others. We’ll consider whether or not self-management of security is a viable alternative for developers, especially in light of the 12 mandates set by the PCI SSC. These mandates, which cover everything from securing authentication features to protecting wireless transmissions and testing payment applications to address vulnerabilities, can take considerable investment, time, and expertise to meet.

We’ll discuss the benefits of enlisting the help of a merchant acquirer that offers integrated, secure payment solutions. You’ll get an overview of using the “Five fingers of payment application security” (consisting of EMV, end-to-end encryption (E2EE), tokenization, PCI, and anti-fraud services) to meet security mandates.

In the payments world, security is generally not considered a profit center. But in this eBook, we’ll look at the tools you can tap for a seamless, secure mobile payments solution that frees you up to spend time and resources toward the merchant and consumer experience that ultimately drives sales.
