3 Business Models Fueled by eCommerce

The growth of the internet has changed commerce forever. It’s hard to imagine not having the ability to go online, fill your shopping cart, checkout, and wait for your shipment. While pure internet retailers may have led the way, there are many other business models that have grown up and thrived in the age of eCommerce. Here we’ll explore three that have reshaped how we look at online commerce.

Flash Sale Sites

Limited inventory. Exclusive bargains. Members-only access. All of these attributes have driven the growth of flash sale sites. Market leaders like Gilt and Rue La La® have led the way in establishing this business model as a popular one for online shoppers. As flash sale sites mature, we’ll see if new players continue to enter the market or if consolidation will occur.

Monthly Subscription Services

Remember when you used to have to buy razors at the drugstore? Not anymore. Innovators like Dollar Shave Club® have reinvented what it means to run errands. Now you can have all of the basics delivered right to your mailbox, on schedule, without missing a beat. Companies like BirchboxTM have also introduced us to curated, monthly sample boxes and an e-shop to purchase full-sized products.

Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs)

MMORPGs are online games featuring large user groups that come together in virtual worlds. These games exist exclusively online where there are no time constraints. Most MMORPGs allow each player to customize an avatar specific to them, present a series of tasks to complete, and unveil items that can be acquired throughout.1 These games can use free, freemium, or pay-to-play pricing models and generated global revenue of 14.9 billion U.S. dollars in 2013.2

These are just some innovative business models fueled by the internet. What can we expect in the future? Only time will tell.
