Merchants are liable for all fraudulent charges and data security losses from your location. Pick your POS system and dealer carefully. Ask if they are a Mercury partner. All Mercury partners receive assistance achieving and maintaining security compliance. If opening a new business, purchase a PABP-validated POS system.
Security tips
- Be aware of skimming devices – these small devices obtain track data that thieves can use to make new fraudulent credit cards. Thieves may entice employees to swipe customer’s credit cards in the skimming device in return for money. Be alert.
- Point cameras at POS – cameras can deter fraudulent activities at the point-of-sale, and record it if such action takes place. Review camera footage daily.
- Change passwords – Passwords should always be kept secure, never be written down, and changed frequently. Use passwords that are a random combination of letters, numbers and symbols rather than common words, names, birthdates, etc.
- Create a network services management plan – a plan can help you determine who will have access to particular programs, who is in charge of updating and maintaining security, and how security updates should be handled.
Document changes by 3rd party vendors – any changes made to your system should be documented and checked for security vulnerabilities. Have 3rd party vendors sign a statement verifying that they did not leave your network open to vulnerabilities.
